About the artwork

Walk on the Beach — Paseo a orillas del mar — was painted in the summer of 1909 on the shore at Valencia, and the two figures are Sorolla’s own family: his wife Clotilde and their eldest daughter María, life-size, walking straight past us. The sea is reduced to long strokes of blue, violet and turquoise, a backdrop rather than a subject.
Sorolla cropped the composition like a snapshot, cutting through Clotilde’s straw hat and leaving an empty sweep of sand below. The painting belongs to the Museo Sorolla in Madrid.

The artist

Joaquín Sorolla

Born in Valencia, Sorolla studied at the San Carlos Academy and later in Madrid and Rome. He became known for fearless painting in open air breezy brushwork, sun-washed whites, and scenes alive with movement. Critics called him a master of luminism: he could make heat shimmer and shade feel cool. Beyond portraits and beach scenes, Sorolla returned often to gardens, where filtered light and foliage let him paint intimacy without drama quiet, human, beautiful.
