The Old Falconer of Ben Gana

Elizabeth Rebecca Coffin × DAILE

€50

MINI500 pieceswithout glue kit

An old falconer sits with a hooded bird on his fist, wrapped against the sun. Coffin paints authority without display: in falconry nothing is taken by force, and the bond holds because it was built slowly. Warm cloth, a steady gaze, a craft carried entirely in the hands.

About the artwork

The Old Falconer of Ben Gana belongs to the long nineteenth-century fascination with North African life, and to a tradition of portraiture that measures a person by their craft rather than their rank. Coffin keeps the scene close and unhurried: the hooded bird, the worn hands, the fabric taking the light.
Falconry runs on restraint. The bird is not owned, only persuaded to return, and everything depends on how the hand behaves. The painting holds that agreement in a single still moment and asks to be looked at the way it was made — slowly, with time to spare.
