The Market Square

Frederick Arthur Bridgman × DAILE

€40

MINI300 pieceswithout glue kit

A market square built the way a painter builds one: the architecture first, then the awnings and baskets, then the people who give it its noise. Bridgman trained under Gérôme in Paris and carried that patience for detail into every corner. No single detail is the subject. Together they are.

About the artwork

The Market Square is Bridgman working at the scale he liked best: a whole place, seen at once, with every corner given the same attention as the centre. Born in Alabama in 1847 and trained in Paris under Jean-Léon Gérôme, he spent his working life in France and travelled for his subjects, bringing home sketchbooks full of walls, cloth, baskets and light.
As a jigsaw the square reveals itself in order: first the buildings that hold the composition, then the crowd, then the details you never noticed while looking at the picture whole.
