About the artwork

The Kiss is square, 180 centimetres on every side, painted in oil and gold leaf between 1907 and 1908. A couple kneels at the edge of a flowering meadow inside one gold robe, and only the pattern tells them apart: rectangles on his side, circles and flowers on hers. Her eyes are closed and her toes curl over the edge of the ground.
Klimt left no record of who the two are. The painting was shown at the Kunstschau in Vienna in 1908, was bought by the Austrian state that year, and belongs today to the Belvedere.
