Once Upon a Time in Riga

by Karine Paronyanc

In “Once Upon a Time in Riga”, a luminous peacock spreads its tail like a stained-glass window over the city. Feathers become arches, ornaments and fragments of night sky; within them you can almost sense spices, shaded gardens and fairy tales. Below and around, Riga’s rooftops, tram lines and warm windows appear as a quiet story about the city – part Armenian miniature, part Baltic evening, all wrapped in glowing colour and decorative detail.

About the work

“Once Upon a Time in Riga” is a love letter to a city told through the language of a bird. The peacock, long associated with beauty, myth and celebration, unfolds a whole world in its tail: fragments of architecture, echoes of Jugendstil facades, secret courtyards and sun-touched domes. Armenian ornamental thinking meets Riga’s skyline, turning the city into a shimmering tapestry of memories.

Warm lights in the windows suggest evenings of conversation and music; tram lines hint at everyday movement, routines and returns home. Yet everything is slightly enchanted, as if seen in a storybook. The painting feels like walking through Riga on a soft night when the air smells of rain and spices and you suddenly notice how magical the familiar streets really are. Owning this work as a DAILE puzzle means assembling that feeling piece by piece until the whole quiet fairy tale stands on your table.

Karine Paronyanc

Latvia

Karine Paronyanc is a Latvian - Armenian painter based in Riga, known for her luminous, symbol-rich canvases where the sun, cosmos, nature and city quietly intertwine. A graduate of the Latvian Academy of Arts (monumental painting), she has held more than twenty solo exhibitions in Latvia and abroad and is a longtime member of the Latvian Artists’ Union. Her motto, “Art with a BIO tag”, reflects her care for life, nature and the rhythms that connect them.

Karine’s work lives somewhere between fairy tale and architecture. She draws on Armenian miniature traditions, cosmic symbolism and the decorative richness of Riga’s Jugendstil to build paintings that feel like illuminated stories. Golds, deep blues, emerald greens and intricate ornaments weave together into scenes where peacocks, fruit, rooftops and celestial signs become carriers of memory, warmth and quiet celebration.

“I like to paint cities as if they were living beings with their own heartbeat, spices in the air, and stories hidden in every roofline.”
Karine Paronyanc

A quiet fairy tale above Riga’s rooftops

“Once Upon a Time in Riga” turns the city into a story told by a peacock’s tail. Rooftops, tram lines and glowing windows gather under its wings like guests at a long evening table. It’s not a noisy, tourist version of Riga, but the intimate one locals know: the smell of wet stone, lights in kitchen windows, the feeling of being held by a familiar skyline. Karine gathers all of that into one luminous composition where architecture becomes ornament and everyday life turns softly mythical.

For anyone who has ever fallen in love with a city at dusk and wanted to keep that moment.
