EDEN
by Dina Zakmane
“Eden” is Zakmane’s vision of a paradise that is not static but alive and constantly transforming. The central figure appears both angelic and plant-like – a being born from light, roots and imagination at once. Its elongated limbs and translucent body echo the fragility of innocence, while the surrounding garden pulses with sensuous, almost otherworldly life.
Nothing in this Eden is purely decorative: every tendril and petal feels like a thought, a memory or a wish taking shape. The vibrant greens, pinks and yellows shimmer between reality and dream, suggesting that paradise is less a place and more a state of perception – a way of seeing the world as endlessly new. This is not a nostalgic Eden we lost, but a living one we can still cultivate inside ourselves.

The artist
Dina Zakmane
Dina Zakmane is a Riga-born Latvian artist whose surreal, decorative paintings explore the illusory nature of reality. A graduate of Janis Rozentāls Art School and the Latvian Academy of Arts, she blends Baltic graphic refinement with fantastical, dreamlike imagery. Her works have been exhibited in Latvia and across Europe, including England, France and Germany.
Zakmane’s art is a vivid dialogue between the real and the imagined. Elongated figures, metamorphosing bodies and fluid, organic shapes swirl through underwater and cosmic landscapes. Using fine, ornamental detail and luminous colour, she invites viewers to question what is solid and what is illusion, and to see the world as a shifting, poetic construct rather than a fixed fact.
A living garden of light and illusion
“Eden” captures the instant when a garden seems to awaken and recognise you back. The figure at its centre is both guardian and child of this world – fragile, luminous, stitched together from petals, wings and light. Around it, forms curl and unfurl like thoughts in motion, hinting that paradise is not somewhere far away but right here, in the way we look at things.
